This letter was written to his son, Al Jr. It is a brave statement of a principled stand, but to post this to his son, regardless of the filial anxiety it would provoke, showed the high price Glock was willing to pay to take the Palestinian side.

Glock sought to feel as a Palestinian would feel. He joined his feelings with theirs as they watched the missiles of their expected deliverer streak towards the enemy metropolis: militarily, the Scuds were insignificant; their only power was emotional.

‘On Friday when the air raid sirens sounded for the 16th time I went to the roof rather than the “sealed room” to see and to listen,’ he wrote in a ‘war diary’ he sent to a number of friends.

I was a few minutes too late to see the streaking missile which many in BZ regularly observe. But what I heard was the whistles and clapping of the Arab inhabitants of the Nusseibehs’ flats, just below us across Nablus Rd to the west. The sound of gunshot was the answer of an Israeli patrol to this happy response of the Arab population. In BZ it is a shame not to be on the roof soon after the siren alerts to the approach of a missile.

The cheering Palestinians probably neither knew nor cared that when Saddam Hussein was warned by his own military advisers that the missiles his forces were launching might cause Palestinian casualties he is reported to have said, ‘I’m not sorting lentils.’
